Hi,

I'd like to generate SVG maps from MapInfo. I planning to export the
map from SVG into XML and then transform it to SVG using an XSLT
stylesheet. I wonder if it is possible to export map coordinates
points from MapInfo into XML ?

Thanx in advance.

You can generate direcly SVG maps from MapInfo, using SVGMapmaker.

have a look to http://www.dbxgeomatics.com/SVGMapMaker.asp?Language=EN
there is a free demo version to try it !

Benjamin,

Thank you for your reply but we can't afford SVGMapMaker and even if
there's a free demo my project's purpose is to generate interactive
maps on the fly at all times so I have to find a way to export the
map coordinates into XML.

Hello,

have you tried this :
http://www.gis-news.de/svg/map2svg.htm
(as far as i know it's free) ?

Otherwise, it is not so difficult to write a mapbasic program that
reads each feature's coordinates and write them in a file with the
SVG syntax.

I have done it like this

First I create a MapJ object based on a mdf, zoom, centerpoint,...

Then I get the objects from every layer, like point vectors and
lines,... and write them to a svg document.

Then I stream this document to an output stream, so you can write it to
jsp, a servlet, anything you want.

Here is an example (it's in dutch but you'll get the idea)

http://gis.cronos.be/svgrenderer/index.jsp?posx=152208.0
<http://gis.cronos.be/svgrenderer/index.jsp?posx=152208.0&posy=212303.0&
zoom=750&a=true&b=true&c=true&d=true&e=true&f=true&g=true&h=true&i=true&
j=true>
&posy=212303.0&zoom=750&a=true&b=true&c=true&d=true&e=true&f=true&g=true
&h=true&i=true&j=true

Is this what you mean?

You may or may not want to go this route but it is an option if you
are a programmer. You can save the coordinates in MapInfo MIF, an
ASCII format. Then, with most any programming language, write a
program that inputs the MIF file line by line, saving data in the XML
format you're aiming at. This could mean saving the coordinates
directly into SVG <path>s. I do this using FoxPro or Visual Basic.
For a Perl example for such a conversion see J. David
Eisenberg's 'SVG Essentials' (www.oreilly.com).
